Date: 01/10/2009 Venue: Beurs van Berlage, Damrak 277, 1012 ZJ AMSTERDAM Programme: download programme SUMMIT THEME: The overall theme of this year’s Summit is “Family Business: a trademark of passion”. Under this broad heading we will be examining six sub-themes around the entrepreneurial and long-term approach that gives family businesses greater flexibility to meet the challenges of today’s global economic downturn whilst restructuring for future dynamic growth. • Fostering entrepreneurship: How do family businesses – new and established, large and small – pursue entrepreneurial opportunities to ensure they remain viable and competitive from one generation to the next? Without damaging their existing businesses, how do owners encourage creativity in the next generation of risk takers and integrate external managers into an entrepreneurial culture? • Family entrepreneurship in times of crisis and conflict: How can family companies emerge stronger and more flexible from crisis, recession and conflict? What approach to family entrepreneurship do some businesses take differently from others that gives them a competitive advantage? • From family business to entrepreneurial families: What can we learn from family-owned business models around the world about how best to diversify from a core business into entrepreneurial ventures whilst maintaining good family governance and values? • Entrepreneurial opportunities for the next generation: Some younger generations are starting their own ventures outside the traditions of their family business. How is the core family business affected by support or rejection of these satellite entrepreneurial activities? • Social entrepreneurship: Social enterprises stand for more-than-profit. How are family businesses using entrepreneurial principles to establish ventures for social change? • Serial family businesses: Much like serial entrepreneurs, family business owners are driven to create wealth and jobs from next to nothing. We learn from peer case studies how the sale of a family business leads to reinvestment with the same passion in new ventures.
