How One Next Gen is Helping Women in Family Businesses Invest for the Future
10th May 2019
In this guest article by Lizzie Gordon we hear why one next generation family member is working to help other women in family businesses turn their investment aspirations into reality.
Personal finance and investing is not something many people, especially those within the family business sphere, are comfortable talking about. However, it is something that many will need to be thinking about more and more as generations move on and businesses start to grow.
Whether it is around succession and passing on both shares and/or personal wealth to the next generation, handing over current investment portfolios and assets within a family office or handling your own personal finances after a death or divorce. Either way, there is no denying that communication and education are key.
When it comes to what do to with it either now or in the future, many of us, especially women, don’t have a clue where to start. Although women are successful in the world of investment, often taking a more long term view with risk and encouraging growth through holding their shares for a longer period of time, they are still very much in the minority.
A report published last year showed that while lots of women have aspirations of creating their own investment portfolio and personal wealth, few actually end up doing so. This was corroborated by an article published at Finder.com stating that that while both men and women have a similar level of interest in investing, women feel that they lack the knowledge and confidence to invest to the same extent as men.
This is why I decided to create the Female Investment Network - an independent initiative with the aim of helping to create a space for women to talk, learn and share about finance and investing. Bridging that gap in knowledge and confidence, ultimately getting more women investing in the stock market and taking an interest in and growing their personal and family wealth.
