Martin Thatcher: Managing Director of Thatchers Cider
Martin Thatcher is a fourth-generation English cidermaker.
Founded in 1904 by Martin’s Great-Grandfather, William Thatcher, Thatchers Cider remains family-run with its mantra to maintain a sustainable company for future generations.
Brought up on the family farm in Somerset, Martin joined his Father in the company from school, working his way up and gaining valuable experience in every part of the business from orchard management, cidermaking, packaging, finance, sales and marketing.
Since becoming Managing Director in 1992, he has driven consistent growth across the company maintaining a firm focus on the issues that are core to the company’s philosophy – heritage, family values, sustainability, provenance and expertise. Having successfully achieved national distribution for Thatchers range of ciders in the UK, its premium brands including Thatchers Gold and Thatchers Haze, Martin has ensured that the name of Thatchers remains synonymous with the consistently highest quality cider at home and increasingly abroad. Thatchers sells its ciders in over 22 countries worldwide.
Martin is an active member of the National Association of Cidermakers, the body that represents the interests of cider producers in the UK and helps raise the profile of the industry to the public. In 2005 he was awarded the coveted Nuffield Farming Trust scholarship; and in 2016 he received the Trust’s Steven and Gill Bullock award for innovation.
Martin is increasingly recognised for the entrepreneurial drive he brings to the company, in 2018 being awarded the prestigious Grocer Gold Award Entrepreneur of the Year title, cited for “outperforming growth through brilliant leadership, vision and courage”, and in 2019 listed in the Sunday Times Maserati 100 for his innovative approach to business.
Encouraging skills development is a passion of Martin’s, and the Thatchers Young Talent apprenticeship and graduate programme that he has introduced into the company has attracted considerable interest not only from applicants keen to join the company, but from wider industry, gaining recognition including the national IGD award for Employability in 2018, and in 2019 the Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Apprenticeships in the FE Week AAC Awards.
With his family, Martin has established the Thatchers Foundation, a charitable trust which supports good causes in Somerset. Martin is married to Anne, and has two teenage children, Eleanor and Peter. He is a keen sports fan, in particular Rugby Union.
