The IFB Debating Society: Why would any next gen in the 21st century pursue a career in the family business? (online event)
22nd September 2020, 16:00 - 17:15
Event Venue: Online via Zoom
‘It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it’ Joseph Joubert, French Moralist & Essayist. We are kicking off the new IFB Debate series with a crucial question that will affect the long-term plans of any family business and its people.
The conundrums facing family businesses can be agonising – and the implications of these conundrums can be huge both for the future of the family and also of the business: “Is our Family Business legacy a gift or a life sentence”, “Are Constitutions just words on a piece of paper?” “Can non-family directors be trusted to make key decisions for our business?”.
There are no consistent answers to any of these questions, each family business having to debate and formulate their own approach amongst their ownership group. To support our community with making better and stronger decisions in their family businesses, we are launching the IFB Debating Society: a safe and fun space where family business members can get together to explore these philosophical family business questions from all dimensions and support one another as we take the discussion outside of the box.
The first session will take place on Tuesday 22nd September where we will debate the motion ‘Why would any next gen in the 21st century pursue a career in the family business?’.
Debating for the motion: Charlie Field, CPJ Field
Debating against the motion: Edouard Thijssen, 5th generation family business member and Co-founder and CEO, Trusted Family
The debates will be facilitated by Juliette Johnson (Juliette Johnson Consultancy) and will be conducted under the Chatham House Rule. The motions for the 2021 sessions will be decided collectively by the IFB community via online polls.
