Governance in the times of COVID-19
10th June 2020
With the current environment we are all in due to Covid, we are all being triggered, and most of us are reacting, behaving based on our story. The puppet master is fully at play. If we are not aware of our story, the puppet master is making the decision on your behalf, all strings attached. The reaction/behavior is choosing you, rather than you choosing how to respond, consciously. Massive difference.
Governance is defined as “The action or manner of governing”.
Governance is the term for the way a group of people, such as a country, do things. Politics deals with people with different ideas working together to create an agreement about what to do, and governance is doing what politics decided needed to be done.
Good governance has 8 major characteristics. It is participatory, consensus oriented, accountable, transparent, responsive, effective and efficient, equitable and inclusive, and follows the rule of law.
When we talk about or think about governance, we tend to connect it with politics, public companies, and family business. Rarely if at all, do we think about governance in the term of an individual. The self, the you, the I or the me, myself and I.
One of my favorite movies is The Peaceful Warrior, based on the best-selling book “The Way of the Peaceful Warrior” by Dan Millman. In the movie there is a quote that defines Governance in the most powerful way I know:
Be conscious of the choices you make and responsible for your actions.
The key word is CONSCIOUS. It is the key to mastering self-governance. As human beings we all have choices in our behaviors, in how we govern ourselves. Yet, most of us are not conscious of our choices. Though we think we are! This is the greatest blindspot of all.
A dear friend used this analogy to discuss human choice.
It's like we have a puppet master making decisions on our behalf, frankly without our permission.
Part of being human is we all have a past, our conditioning, what I refer to as “our story.” Unless we are aware of and understand what our story is, our story (the puppet master) will be influencing every choice for us... without our ever realizing it.
Here is a simple diagram (The Safe Space™ Equation) which explains how we as human beings behave and do life.
We all have a belief/story about ourselves which was conceived in our past, based on experiences. When an event occurs that reminds us of that belief/story, we are triggered, and that trigger is how we behave automatically. What is important to point out here, is the behavior is not conscious, it decides for us, as opposed to us choosing how to behave/respond to the trigger.
Referring back to the eight characteristics of good governance––participatory, consensus oriented, accountable, transparent, responsive, effective, and efficient, equitable and inclusive, following the rule of law––, how are you GOVERNING YOURSELF? Are you operating in good governance as a human being, with yourself, with your spouse , your partner, your kids, your family and your community?
Are you living your life based on the rules of engagement and response that you have put in place for yourself? By rules I refer to how you have made the conscious choice on how to be, act, respond and behave.
Are you living/being or as I refer “actioninzing” your values, your guiding principles?
If you answered yes, good for you. If no, welcome to being human.
Saying is easy, doing is harder, BEING IS MASTERY.
I believe we all want to feel safe; we want to feel safe in our environments, in our relationships and with our wealth. What I have learnt on my journey with the assistance of my coaches is one simple rule.
When I am in good governance starting with myself, I feel safe and assured, and inherently create a safer world for those I interact with. This is what we at Veritage refer to as “GOVERNANCE IN ACTION” and it is what we have witnessed transform individuals, families and legacies from the inside out, time and again.
This is the real life work of “talking to the man in the mirror” and changing the world along the way.
